The Peasant

The message of this poem is that happiness is not in material wealth, but in working hard and being content with what life has given you. Throughout the poem, Robinson brings attention to the peasant's meager supplies with words such as homely, humble, and small. Line 5 states, "The hardy PEASANT in his little cot." Robinson capitalizes "peasant" to emphasize the fact that the man is poor but still manages to be "hardy." This is supporting evidence that happiness is a choice, if a person has health, food, shelter, and warmth, even if those are not the best, they are enough to achieve contentment and a feeling of fulfillment in life.
